Volkswagen "The Thing" Kit Card
Meet The Thing, officially the Volkswagen Type 181, a boxy little off-roader with a genuinely strange history. It started life in the late 1960s as a stripped-down utility vehicle for the West German military, built using the floorpan of a Karmann Ghia and mechanicals from the Beetle. Volkswagen brought it to America in 1973 under the name The Thing, and it was gone from the US market again by 1975, squeezed out by tightening safety regulations. In that short window it picked up a cult following among surfers and beach towns for being cheap, doorless, and unbothered by sand.
Now it builds itself from a proper model-kit sprue, wheels, chassis, roof and all. Snap the pieces together and park it on your desk as a tiny tribute to a car that never quite fit in anywhere, and was better for it.
